You will want to locate a magnifying glass and a flashlight, as searching for head lice is not an easy task to the naked eye. Don your gloves and have someone else hold the flashlight above your child’s scalp. Be sure to grab segments of hair and point your magnifying glass above the scalp. 

If you see small white flecks almost like sand at the base of their scalp, those are lice eggs or nits. Be aware that dandruff can look very similar to nits so it is best to take a lice comb and from the base of your loved one’s head try to comb out the nit. One of the main identifiers that it is head lice eggs and not dandruff is it will be much harder to remove the eggs from the scalp. If all the above criteria are met, unfortunately, it is safe to assume that you have head lice.
